injuries and Conditions
__
There are many ways to treat injuries and conditions and there is not a cookbook approch, everyone is different.
Bicipital Strain Definition: A strain to the Biceps Brachii. MOI: excessive force applied. Direct trauma. Shear force. Elbow hyperextension Treatment: RICE. Removal from activity Rehabilitation: RICE. ROM, strengthening Humeral Fracture Definition: a fracture to the humerus MOI: blunt trauma. FOOSH Treatment: RICE, Splint. Removal from activity. Referral for x-ray Rehabilitation: Immobilization. Muscle strengthening around surrounding structures. ROM. Strengthening. Epiphyseal Fracture Definition: Fracture to the epiphyseal MOI: FOOSH. Hyperextended elbow Treatment: RICE, Splint. Removal from activity. Referral for x-ray Rehabilitation Immobilization. Muscle strengthening around surrounding structures. ROM. Strengthening Humeral Contusion Definition: Contusion to the arm MOI: blunt trauma Treatment: RICE continue participation as tolerated Rehabilitation: RICE; Jobst compression. Strengthing Humeral Exostoses Definition: abnormal bony growth on the humerus MOI: previous injuries allow for deformation to occur Treatment: referral to physician Rehabilitation: follow physician orders. Supracondylar Fracture Definition: fracture to the supracondylar ridge MOI: trauma, motor vehicle, fall from height. FOOSH Treatment: RICE, Splint. Removal from activity. Referral for x-ray Rehabilitation: Surgery. Post surgical rehab: ROM strengthening. Flexibility. Olecranon Bursitis Definition: inflammation of the olecranon bursae MOI: repeated trauma to the olecranon bursae, or surrounding areas. Treatment: RICE. Padding/donut, participate as tolerated. Rehabilitation: RICE, NSAIDs, jobst boot, MCL sprain Definition; strain the ulnar collateral ligament at the elbow MOI: excessive varus force, FOOSH, hyperextension Treatment: RICE, Removal form activity Rehabilitation: RICE, ROM/flexibility, strengthening. Medial elbow strain Definition: strain to the wrist flexors. MOI: excessive wrist extension, blunt trauma Treatment: RICE, Removal form activity Rehabilitation: RICE. ROM, strengthening Elbow Hyperextension Definition: hyperextension of the elbow past it’s normal ROM MOI: FOOSH, fall from a height, forced Treatment: RICE, Removal from activity Rehabilitation: asses damage done to the area. Possible splint. RICE. ROM. Elbow Dislocation Definition: dislocation of the elbow MOI: axial force through the forearm while the elbow is slightly flexed. Treatment: asses nuero and vascular function. Immobilization. Referral Rehabilitation: possible surgery. immobilization, RICE, flexibility and strength Elbow Fracture Definition: fracture to the elbow MOI: FOOSH, Hyperextension, Treatment: asses nuero and vascular function. Immobilization. Referral Rehabilitation: possible surgery. immobilization, RICE, flexibility and strength Radial Nerve Injury Definition: trauma to the radial nerve MOI: blunt trauma, compression, secondary to Fx Treatment: dermatomes and myotomes. RICE. Rehabilitation: proprioception exercises Medial Epicondylitis Definition: inflammation at the medial epicondyle and muscles that originate from it. MOI: repetitive snapping of the wrist and pronation of the forearm Treatment: RICE, play as tolerated Rehabilitation: Wrist muscle strengthening, ultrasound. Transverse friction massage. Lateral Epicondylitis Definition: inflammation at the lateral epicondyle. MOI: repetitive forceful eccentric contractions of the wrist extensors Treatment: RICE, play as tolerated Rehabilitation: Wrist muscle strengthening, ultrasound. Transverse friction massage. Forearm Contusion Definition: Contusion to the forearm, radius, ulna MOI: blunt trauma Treatment: RICE, play as tolerated. Rehabilitation: RICE; Jobst compression. Strengthing Radial Head Fracture Definition: a fracture to the radial head of the radius MOI: blunt force, FOOSH, direct trauma Treatment: assess distal pulses, immobilize, referral Rehabilitation: surgery, immobilization, ROM, strengthening Treatment: Forearm Splint Definition: a splint used to resist a movement of the wrist, such as wrist extension or flexion. Used for Dislocation or Subluxation Definition: Dislocation: displacement of a bone from it’s original position Subluxation: displacement of a bone from it’s original position followed by immediate relocation: MOI: very high valgus, varus, or axial force. Treatment: immobilization. Referral. Rehabilitation: possible surgery, immobilization, ROM, strengthening. Brace Pronator Teres Syndrome Definition: entrapment of the median nerve. MOI: compression of the nerve due to swelling or hypertrophy of the pronator teres Treatment: Dermatomes, Myotomes, removal from play, referral Rehabilitation: RICE, NSAIDs possible surgery. Nerve Injury Definition: damage to a nerve MOI: blunt trauma, shear force, compression Treatment: Dermatomes and Myotomes. Removal from activity Rehabilitation: proprioception exercises, ROM, strengthening Bursitis Definition: inflammation of the bursae MOI: direct trauma, repeated trauma Treatment: RICE, Padding, play as tolerated. Rehabilitation: RICE, NSAIDs, ROM Osteochondritis Dissecans Definition: dislodged fragments of bone in the joint space MOI: increases valgus loading due to overahead throwing Treatment: referral Rehabilitation: possible surgery, strengthening and ROM. "Gunstock" deformity (Varus angulation) Definition: A decrease in the carrying angle MOI: trauma, supracondylar fracture in a child Treatment: Rehabilitation: Possible surgery Cubitus Valgus Definition: Abnormal carrying angle of more that 5-15degrees MOI: epiphyseal damage secondary to lateral epicondylar fracture Treatment: Rehabilitation: 17. With the athlete that suffered the elbow injury, which injuries do you think could have occurred?
